Mona Matbou Riahi

Clarinetist and composer Mona Matbou Riahi is an acclaimed and versatile Iranian musician. Her unique approach of performing and boundless technical abilities in improvisation has mesmerized the audience internationally. Active member of NAQSH DUO, she has been appeared in highly recognized music festivals worldwide. She is an ECM artist with her duo album “Narrante” with Golfam Khayam.

Her profound interest for experimental music and free improvisation brought her on stage in different project such as Gabbeh ensemble as well as performing with internationally well known musicians such as John Tilbury, Kinan Azmeh, Anna Clara Hauf, and Maja Osjanik among others. 

Her curiosity and eagerness for new discoveries in clarinet extended techniques and improvisation has triggered the audience’s attention in International festivals such as Wien Modern, Glatt&Verkehrt, KlezMore festival, Jazz and the city Salzburg, Linzfest, Balkan Fever, Salam Orient, Festival4020, HONART festival, Ulrichsberger Kaleidophon, JazzWerkstatt Wien ,Vienna Roomservice 4, Ljubljana Ljubljena (beloved). 

Born in Tehran (1990), during her early years of musical education she studied in “Tehran conservatory of music”. At the age of 17, Mona Matbou-Riahi moved to Vienna for further studies and entered the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts. She has been prize winner of various competitions and scholarships such as Start-Stipendium 2017 and Mozart festival in cooperation with of the University of Music and Dramatic Arts in Graz (KUG). She is based in Vienna

Mona is featured by her dance performance in the video of our upcoming album “Terra”, and her solo clarinet improvisation in Book of Kings.
